The Art of Meditation

For this past week, I dedicated at least 10 minutes to purposeful meditation either in the morning or before bed. Meditating has been on my "to-do" list for a while now for a few reasons...

  1. It's raved about by everyone who practices consistently. I've never met someone who claimed that meditation made their lives worse, or caused an issue for them. Rather, it's always been a center of peace and renewal of the spirit for others, so I was curious on if I would have that experience too.

  2. It's the center of every 'that girl' routine. (For reference - 'that girl' has been a trend on TikTok for the last couple of months, which promotes a 'healthy' lifestyle/'healthy' habits in order to be the best/healthiest versions of ourselves). In all honesty, most 'that girl' routines are unrealistic for me, but the meditation aspect has always been enticing.

  3. I hate journaling. It's something that I personally have never found to be productive, as I always get stuck in a negative loop of thoughts, that end up spiraling worse and worse. Meditation however, can easily be guided back to a focus on our breath, thus making it more attainable for me.

Now... my thoughts/review. My meditation was not a stereotypical 'sit on the floor and be quiet for 2 hours'. Rather, I did yoga and a lot of Headspace. (Literally the guided meditation app - Headspace). For me, just the act of sitting, and working to slow down my mind is what I counted as my meditation for the day; wether that was on the way to the gym and listening to a guided meditation (which I acknowledge that this means I couldn't fully quiet my thoughts and focus on my breath, but it's what I did for this week to get started), or going to yoga and counting it, just due to the innate focus we should be having on the rhythm of our breath while practicing.

Do I feel any different? Calmer? Less irritable? Honestly... not at the moment, but that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy the small bits of silence throughout my day. Plus, I do believe that with more time, I would see more benefits; but after doing it for only a week, I don't quite have the power to make a decision to (or to not) meditate.

I recommend taking some time to try it if you're thinking it would benefit you, and while I'm not sponsored by Headspace, I would recommend a guided meditation app just to help you get going and stay focused.

All in all, I plan on continuing daily meditation for at least the next few weeks, and if anything changes, I'll write another post :)

Have a great day, don't forget to find some peace/quiet within the chaos of the day/week!
