Welcome fans and followers of this new mini-series I'm going to call, 'Southern Hospitality.' Truly just using this to document what it's like to be far from home for college, what it's like going to an SEC school when you're from the midwest, life not being in greek life, and learning to just function independently.
For those who are unaware, I transferred to... drumroll, please... The University of Alabama! Shocker, I know. A place where 80 degrees feels cool, Hoka's are 'cute shoes,' and football is bigger than anything.
There are so many layers to moving to someplace with a different culture, while still in the United States, the differences between the midwest/east coast/west coast/ and south are vastly different. (Nebraska and those other farming states don't count into anything here. So sorry).
From my own perspective... here are the *current* differences and pros/cons that I've noticed...
- The pace of life is much slower than other parts of the USA. People move slower, drive slower, and overall seem more relaxed.
- You have to DRIVE to get to a Trader Joes, CycleBar, etc. I'm not sure if this is a general thing since my hometown is blessed with many great places that I took for granted, but it's still something I notice down here.
- People are very nice... but not always kind. What's the difference? You can be nice, but turn around and be disrespectful to someone else behind closed doors, but to be kind is to be genuine. This may be a 'southern hospitality' thing, but those who are from the south always seem relatively nice.
- Religion is huge, regardless of what it is. People here have no hesitation to host bible study's in public, or publicly worship in general. (Which I honestly enjoy, it's nice being able to see people from different backgrounds all come together in a space, regardless of what that is).
- The weather here is so odd. Yesterday it was 90. Today the high is 65. Not sure what to do about that but can't say I'm not used to it being from Michigan.
That's pretty much all I have to say right now. Just an overall word/thought dump per usual, but I'm enjoying the change that the move has brought, and all the people I've met so far <3
some day to day pics <3 Roll Tide.
