The benefits of cold showers have been widely debated across the globe for years now. For reference, some include; an increase in circulation, reducing muscle soreness, and help reduce cortisol levels. Now, that's not the say that there are no drawbacks, but I've always been intrigued by trying it, but cold showers? Really? They don't have the absolute greatest appeal to me from a relaxation standpoint.
Yet, here I am, after taking a cold shower every day for this past week, I can attest (for myself at least) for why I will NOT be continuing these on a daily basis...
Now, don't get me wrong, did I find it refreshing after a workout? For a minute or two yes. Was it something I may be open to trying again in the summer? Possibly; but for a January 'challenge'? ... not again. There were some positives, if I was tired before taking a shower, it woke me right up. Sadly though, that was the only major benefit I found. Otherwise, it was full of lots of goosebumps, and possibly the shortest showers I have ever taken. So, let's keep this short, just like my showers were.
If you're considering playing around with taking cold showers, go for it, if you're on the fence..... stay to the side of a warmer shower. It's just so much better. Now that doesn't mean I'm not open to trying it again in the future, but for right now, this is something that truly was only tolerable for a week - and that's okay!
